Cocktail of the week: Ti'Punch

Ti’punch (pronounced “tee paunch,” Creole for "small punch") can be described in three words: simple, strong and delicious.

First, it’s a simple drink with only three ingredients: Rhum Agricole, cane syrup and lime. Notice that I didn’t just list rum, sugar and lime. The success of this drink lies in the right products. Rhum agricole is a Caribbean rum made from fresh sugar cane juice rather than molasses, and cane syrup is made from sugar cane rather than refined sugar. Those products are not widely available at your local supermarket however, you can find it at specialty stores or online without too much difficulty.



Ti’Punch is also strong-- it’s pretty much the West Indies’ version of the caipirinha, with the main ingredient being rum, but somehow it goes down like milk!


Finally, it’s delicious. It’s widely known to be the official drink of Guadeloupe and Martinique, and is usually enjoyed as an aperitif. So if you would rather be laying in a hammock with a drink in your hand than whatever you’re doing right now, this recipe will help you at least pretend that you are.


What you’ll need:
2 oz Rhum Agricole blanc (Saint James or another white rum agricole)
1 Fresh lime
¼ oz Monin Sugar Cane Syrup or Canadou sirop de canne


Pour the cane syrup in a small old-fashioned glass, then squeeze half a lime over it so that it sprinkles over the sugar. Add the rum and stir until the syrup is dissolved. Even though it’s a tropical drink, Ti’Punch is usually served without ice, but feel free to add an ice cube or two and stir it up. Now kick back, relax, and start sipping.
